The five-year survival rate for people diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer that has spread (metastasized) to other areas of the body is 5 percent.

Life expectancy and survival rates for stage 3 breast cancer are improving all the time. The current 5-year survival rates for stage 3 breast cancer are 72 percent for women and 75 percent for men.

Approximately 60% of laryngeal cancer is found in the glottis. Almost 80% of cases are found in its earliest stage, which has a survival rate of 90%. When the cancer is in the most advanced stage and has spread to other parts of the body, the survival rate is 44%.

For patients with advanced forms of follicular lymphoma (ie, stages III and IV disease) (table 1), the average survival is greater than 20 years. Despite its slow-growing nature, it is unclear whether most cases of follicular lymphoma can be cured with currently available therapies.

The average 10-year survival rate for women with invasive breast cancer is 84%. If the invasive cancer is located only in the breast, the 5-year survival rate of women with breast cancer is 99%. Sixty-two percent (62%) of women with breast cancer are diagnosed with this stage.

The five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 56 percent for cases detected when the disease is still localized (within the lungs). However, only 16 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage. For distant tumors (spread to other organs) the five-year survival rate is only 5 percent.

For example, nearly 89% of people with stage 4 thyroid cancer live for at least five years, with many living 10 years or more. On the other hand, only around 8% of people with stage 4 mesothelioma will survive for five years or more.

While its official five-year survival rate is about 40%, advances in care are helping more patients live longer. Recent studies have shown that with the right treatment, inflammatory breast cancer's five-year survival rate is closer to 70% for stage III patients, and 50% to 55% for stage IV patients.

The colon cancer survival rate is encouragingly high; more than 92 percent of patients diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer live for at least five years after diagnosis.

The 5-year survival rate for people with all types of ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancers is 49%. However, the rate varies widely depending on the person's age, as well as the stage, cell type, and grade of the cancer.

Approximately 60% of patients with stage II cervical cancer survived 5 years from treatment with radiation therapy alone. More recently, however, the addition of chemotherapy (anti-cancer drugs) has improved long-term outcomes in patients with this disease.

Stage 1 prostate cancer has a 5-year survival rate of nearly 100 percent.

Stage II tumors have survival rates ranging from 55 to 80 percent. A stage III colon cancer has about a 40 percent chance of cure and a patient with a stage IV tumor has only a 10 percent chance of a cure.

The one-year survival rate for all patients diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma is about 92 percent. The five-year survival rate is about 86 percent. For people with stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma, the survival rate is lower. But even in stage 4 you can beat the disease.

This would mean women with stage II breast cancer were, on average, 85 percent as likely to live 5 years beyond their diagnosis as women in the general population. Say, the 5-year relative survival for women with stage I breast cancer was 100 percent.

Risk of mortality from esophagectomy for Barrett's Esophagus is 2% (range of 0-4%). Five year survival rate for late stage esophageal adenocarcinoma is approximately 13%.
